App State Hits Rock Bottom

Following a first-ever sub-.500 record (5–6) at the FBS level under Shawn Clark, Appalachian State made a bold move to invigorate the program. Clark, despite a strong five‑year tenure (40–24), was relieved of his duties on December 2, 2024, after missing bowl eligibility and failing to secure a Sun Belt title in recent years. In swift fashion, the school hired Dowell Loggains, formerly South Carolina’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach on December 7.Signaling a strategic pivot toward offensive innovation.

Renewed Roster and Coaching Staff Bolster Outlook

Loggains wasted no time reshaping the team. The offseason saw a flurry of incoming transfers: dual-threat QB AJ Swann from LSU/Vanderbilt, defensive reinforcements like S Dylan Hasz and WR Davion Dozier from Arkansas, and several other key position group additions. Complementing the roster revamp, the coaching staff was layered with experienced hires: Missouri’s DJ Smith as defensive coordinator, former South Carolina assistants, and NFL-savvy strategist Clyde Christensen among them.

Momentum Building Toward 2025

With rejuvenated offensive creativity, sturdy coaching upgrades, and a clear deadline for turning things around, the Mountaineers are mounting a credible comeback. Their 2025 schedule includes high-profile non‑conference matchups ( Boise State, Oregon State), giving Loggains an early platform to impress the fan base. Is Appalachian State on path to reclaim competitiveness in the Sun Belt and reach the postseason once again? The stage is definitely set.
