Decatur, Georgia – Southwest DeKalb High School hosted its annual Blue & Gold Spring Game Friday night, and the atmosphere delivered everything fans could ask for and more as the Panthers continued building momentum toward the 2026 season. One thing about Southwest DeKalb, the tradition and pride surrounding the program always shows up, and Friday night was no different. The Panthers band kept the crowd energized throughout the evening with nonstop music and performances that gave the spring game a true Friday night feel. The Panthers Touchdown Club also made sure fans were taken care of off the field. Hot fish, food plates, and other refreshments added to the family environment as supporters gathered to celebrate another season of Panthers football. The combination of football, music, and community support created the perfect setting for a successful spring event.
While the atmosphere stood out, the product on the field may have been even more exciting.
Leading the way offensively for the Panthers is returning starting quarterback Braylon Carter, who looked sharp throughout the evening. Carter appeared extremely comfortable operating within the offense and showed confidence every time he touched the football. He looked fully locked in for what could become a huge 2026 campaign. His leadership and experience will be a major key for the Panthers moving offense.
Defensively, linebacker Chase Thomas set the tone with his physicality and playmaking ability. Thomas flashed the ability to disrupt plays all over the field and made his presence felt throughout the game. The Panthers will lean heavily on his leadership this season, and from the looks of Friday night, he appears more than ready to anchor the defense.
Head Coach Marion Bell III understands the importance of maximizing spring practice and building momentum early heading into the summer. The Panthers know the work being put in now can directly impact success during the fall season. That mentality will immediately be tested next week when Southwest DeKalb faces defending state champion Creekside High School in a highly anticipated spring scrimmage. When asked about the matchup, Bell made it clear his team understands the challenge ahead, stating, “We are playing the best team in Georgia.” That statement alone shows the seriousness and focus surrounding the upcoming battle. The matchup against Creekside will serve as an early measuring stick for the Panthers as they evaluate where they stand heading into summer workouts and offseason preparation.
From the looks of Friday night, Southwest DeKalb appears fully united entering the 2026 season. The players are motivated, the coaching staff is focused, the booster clubs are engaged, and the fans are ready to rally behind the Panthers once again.
With the support system in place and talent continuing to emerge on both sides of the ball, the Panthers look prepared to make noise this fall, and next week’s clash against Creekside will be the next big step in that journey.
