Legendary Coach Set to Retire After 26 Years of Memories and Moments

Stone Mountain, GA – If you are from the Metro Atlanta area and you haven’t heard the name James Hartry…you may have been living under a rock for the past 30 years or so. James Hartry; born June 24th, 1958 in Milledgeville, Georgia, graduate of Baldwin High School class of 1976 and Clark-Atlanta University class of 1982, a member of Omega Psi Phi Inc. as well as the “100 Black Men of DEKALB” is a coach that I would like to call “life-changing”.

The legendary coach who has spent his entire career coaching at Tucker High School (3 as an assistant, 26 as head coach) won over 500 games, multiple region championships and a state championship along with producing a plethora of NCAA/NBA talent is deciding to literally “throw in the towel”. He leaves behind a program defined by consistency, discipline, and sustained success. During his time at Tucker, his teams reached the 20-win mark 13 times, a remarkable feat that speaks to his success rather than isolated peaks. Six of those seasons resulted in 25 or more wins, cementing Tucker as a perennial contender under his tutelage. From his passionate locker room speeches to his nonstop high intensity when he’s pacing the sidelines, Hartry knew what it took to get the most out of his players. Due to his lineage overtime he was able to adapt and adjust to the different eras and generations of talent that have came and went through his program. Currently a senior, Julian Glenewinkel (who was born and raised in Switzerland) describes his impact on the local high school basketball scene as “immeasurable” and that he is “Tucker personified” while Freshman Vance Wilder Jr. calls him “more than a coach” but someone he “can trust with anything”.

From a personal standpoint, being a Tucker High alum and also having his health class my sophomore year, Coach Hartry was also a great teacher who always knew how to relate to everyone’s situations, no matter who it was. You could always talk to him about almost anything even when times may have seemed tough for him as a coach (if there were any anyway). I’ve witnessed blowout wins, to heartbreaking losses (sorry about 2019 by the way) and everything in between when it comes to how Coach ran his program so I can honestly say that I am thankful to be apart of the journey in my own special way through this article, being my first one as a member of the Fanverse family. (Precite ya James)

As Tucker prepares to turn the page on a historic and all-around memorable chapter, the legacy James Hartry leaves behind is firmly intact. His influence will continue to be felt in the program, the community, and in the many players and students whose lives he helped shaped along the way. Retirement may mark the end of his time on the bench and in the school halls but his impact on not just Tucker basketball, but the entirety of the Metro Atlanta basketball scene along with the community will be leave a legacy that will last for a lifetime.
