SW Dekalb Hold Off Late Charge to Secure Statement Region Win Over Tucker

Decatur, GA – I dubbed it my “Game of the Week,” and on Friday night, Southwest DeKalb and Tucker delivered a matchup that fully lived up to the billing. In a highly competitive Region showdown, the homestanding Panthers withstood a furious late push to defeat the visiting Tucker Tigers, 58–48, improving their position in the region standings.

Southwest DeKalb was led by a balanced offensive attack as Glanton III and Jourden Smoak each poured in 17 points, setting the tone on the scoreboard. Jackson Usher added 15 points, giving the Panthers three players in double figures and providing steady scoring throughout the night.

Tucker was equally competitive, led by Vance Wilder with 14 points. Adrain Johnson turned in a strong all-around performance with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Julien Glenewinkel narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds. The Panthers appeared to take firm control early in the fourth quarter. Southwest DeKalb (9–2, 4–1) opened the final period with four quick points from Smoak, stretching the lead to as many as 18 at 51–33 with 6:38 remaining. At that moment, the Panthers looked poised to cruise to a comfortable victory.

However, Tucker (7–3, 3–2) refused to go quietly. Sparked by Adrain Johnson, the Tigers mounted an impressive 11–0 run to climb back into contention. Johnson ignited the surge with a three-pointer at the 6:22 mark and followed it up with aggressive play in the paint. After Tucker trimmed the deficit to 51–38 at the free-throw line, Johnson scored six unanswered points, capping the run with an offensive putback that pulled the Tigers within 51–44 with 2:48 left.

With momentum beginning to swing, Southwest DeKalb responded with poise. The Panthers capitalized on two costly Tucker turnovers to regain control. Aaron Burks knocked down one of two free throws, Nazir Mergan came up with a timely steal and layup, and Glanton finished strong through contact on a driving layup. The quick five-point burst pushed the lead back to double digits at 58–46, effectively sealing the game and leading to the final score of 58–48.

After the game, Southwest DeKalb head coach Coach Brown praised his team’s ability to close out the contest but expressed concern over the lapse that allowed Tucker back into the game.

“We didn’t play up to our expectations or our standards,” Brown said, acknowledging the need for sharper execution down the stretch.

Despite the coach’s concerns, the win carried major significance for the Panthers. With the victory, Southwest DeKalb now stands alone in second place in the region, trailing only St. Pius. In a tightly contested region race, Friday night’s performance may prove to be a defining moment as the Panthers continue their push toward the postseason.
