Jonesboro, GA – The Griffin Bears continued their remarkable turnaround season with a hard-fought 21-15 victory over the Jonesboro Cardinals on Friday night, improving to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-AAAA play.
In a matchup that featured two teams battling for playoff position, the Bears leaned heavily on their physical run game and stout defense to secure the win. Head Coach Bernard Goodrum’s squad showed toughness and resilience from start to finish, embodying the “smash-mouth” brand of football that has fueled their resurgence this season.
The opening quarter belonged to Jonesboro, as the Cardinals struck first on defense with a safety, taking an early 2-0 lead. Not long after, quarterback Ethan Sharpe powered his way into the end zone on a rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 8-0. But Griffin would respond. After recovering a Jonesboro fumble, Griffin’s running back broke through the defense for a key touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 8-7 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Bears’ offense came alive behind the steady leadership of quarterback Kelvin Johnson. Johnson connected for a touchdown pass to give Griffin its first lead of the night, 14-8. Then, showing his dual-threat ability, Johnson capped another drive with a rushing touchdown, extending the Bears’ advantage to 21-8. Jonesboro refused to go quietly, though. In the fourth quarter, Ethan Sharpe found Jontavius Wyman on a deep 48-yard touchdown pass to pull the Cardinals within striking distance, 21-15. Despite the late push, Griffin’s defense stood tall, closing out the game to secure another region victory.
After the win, Coach Goodrum praised his players and staff for their discipline and effort.
“It is truly special…This was a great win for the community (Griffin),” Goodrum said.
After winning only one game last season, Griffin improves to 6-2 overall and 4-0 in Region 3-AAAA, remaining in prime position for a playoff berth. The Bears will return home next Friday, October 24, to host Central in another key region matchup.
