Gainesville, GA – The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has officially vacated Gainesville High School’s Class 5A state football championship runner-up finish after determining the program used an ineligible player during the 2024 postseason. According to the GHSA, the violation occurred during Gainesville’s Class 5A state semifinal matchup against Rome. Gainesville won that game decisively, 37–6, advancing to the state championship game. However, it was later discovered that an ineligible player participated in the semifinal contest, prompting a full investigation by the association. As a result, the GHSA has disqualified Gainesville from the postseason, levied a monetary fine against the program, and formally vacated the Red Elephants’ appearance in the Class 5A state championship game.

Gainesville went on to face Thomas County Central in the title game in December, where the Red Elephants suffered a 62–21 loss. Despite the lopsided defeat, the championship appearance itself has now been removed from the official records due to the eligibility infraction.

The ruling does not alter Thomas County Central’s status as the Class 5A state champion, but it does erase Gainesville’s postseason advancement beyond the semifinals. The GHSA emphasized that eligibility rules are strictly enforced to ensure competitive fairness across all member schools. This decision brings a disappointing conclusion to what had been a successful season on the field for Gainesville, while also serving as a reminder of the importance of compliance with GHSA eligibility regulations at every stage of the postseason.
