Jonesboro, GA – The Jonesboro Cardinals opened their season in dominant fashion Friday night, defeating Mount Zion Bulldogs 37-11 in a non-league showdown that energized the crowd.
From the start, Jonesboro controlled the tempo on both sides of the ball. Quarterback Ethan Sharpe led the Cardinals’ offense with poise, and running back Lucious Murray added balance to the attack, powering his way to over 100 rushing yards and three touchdowns, including a highlight 40-yard breakaway in the second quarter.
Mount Zion showed flashes of fight, cutting the deficit to 17-8 in the second quarter after a field goal and a short touchdown run. But from there, the Bulldogs struggled to sustain drives, while Jonesboro steadily pulled away. By the fourth quarter, the Cardinals had stretched their lead beyond reach, closing out the rivalry win with a convincing 37-11 final score.

Mount Zion drops to 0-1, and the Cardinals stand at 1-0 and will now shift gears as they prepare for a tough non-league showdown against the Douglas County Tigers (1-0). The Cardinals impressed in their opener, showcasing their grit, but the challenge ahead may be even greater. Douglas County, one of the top programs in Georgia, is also coming in undefeated after a convincing 21-7 win over North Gwinnett in their opener. The Tigers’ defense dominated that contest, limiting a typically explosive North Gwinnett offense to a single score. Friday’s matchup promises to be a test of strength, speed, and discipline. Jonesboro will need to be sharp on offense while finding ways to slow down Douglas County’s ground game and playmaking ability on the outside. The showdown between Jonesboro and Douglas County could be an early season statement game for both programs. A win would not only keep momentum rolling but also elevate either team’s standing across the state.
