Riverdale Shakes Things Up at Quarterback, Rallies Past Charles Drew for Rivalry Win

Riverdale, GA – In a game full of  emotions and community pride, the Riverdale Raiders emerged victorious over the Charles Drew Titans on Thursday night, securing a statement win in one of the most anticipated Clayton County rivalry matchups of the season. It was a rivalry game filled with momentum swings, big defensive plays, and explosive touchdowns. But in the end, Riverdale made the plays that mattered most to defeat Charles Drew 28-18 on Thursday night. CB/WR William Cochran’s all-around with impact two interceptions and a touchdown reception proved to be the difference-maker in the victory. In a bold mid-game move, the Riverdale Raiders changed quarterbacks, and it changed the outcome of their rivalry showdown with the Charles Drew Titans. Riverdale opened the game with Ayron McKinney under center, but the offense struggled to find rhythm against a tough Titans defense. Midway through the second quarter, the Raiders coaching staff turned to Trent Gurley, a decision that instantly sparked the Raiders’ attack.

In the third quarter with Riverdale clinging to an 8-6 lead, Charles Drew’s defense intercepted Gurley’s pass and returned the ball to their own 39-yard line, giving the Titans a chance to seize momentum. But Riverdale’s defense had other plans. On the very next drive, Raider cornerback William Cochran Jr. came up with a clutch interception that swung momentum back to Riverdale.

Just a few plays later, the Raiders capitalized. Gurley connected with Cochran again, this time on offense, for a 30-yard touchdown strike. After the successful two-point conversion, Riverdale stretched its lead to 16-6. Riverdale kept rolling later in the third quarter with a rushing touchdown that pushed the advantage to 22-6, giving the Raiders breathing room heading into the fourth.

Drew, however, wasn’t done fighting. The Titans mounted a late comeback attempt, beginning with a 5-yard rushing touchdown  to cut the deficit to 22-12. Moments later, Drew’s quarterback found his receiver in the end zone for another score, suddenly pulling the Titans within 22-18. With the game tightening, Riverdale again leaned on its defense, and once more, it was William Cochran Jr. who delivered. The junior standout sealed the game with his second interception of the night, giving Riverdale the ball deep in Drew territory. One final dagger came when Riverdale’s Malachi Davis broke free for a 33-yard rushing touchdown, putting the game out of reach. The Raiders closed out the rivalry win 28-18.

For the Raiders, the victory is more than just a mark in the win column, it’s a confidence boost as they prepare for the challenges ahead. For Charles Drew, the loss is a tough one, but with plenty of season left, they’ll look to bounce back quickly.
