Middle school teams from across North Georgia gathered at Denmark High School to compete against some of the area’s top talent, but what stood out just as much as the football was how smoothly the entire event was executed. Having covered countless 7-on-7 tournaments over the years, I’ve witnessed events of every size and quality. Few, if any, have been managed as efficiently as this one. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of the day was something that often gets overlooked at offseason events, time management. Games began almost exactly on schedule throughout the day, allowing players, coaches, parents, and media members to enjoy a seamless experience from start to finish.
While covering the tournament, I struck up a conversation with another member of the media who couldn’t stop praising the event’s organization. Curious, I asked him why he believed this tournament stood above the rest. His answer was simple. “Keels.” That one word spoke volumes.
Micah Keels, founder of Next Gen Academy, has built a reputation for excellence, and the Battle of North Georgia reflected that vision from the opening whistle until the championship game. However, player development remains the organization’s primary mission.
In a recent interview with FanVerse Sports, Keels emphasized the distinction between traditional 7-on-7 football and flag football. A passionate advocate for the sport, he believes one of the defining characteristics of true 7-on-7 competition is the four-second passing clock for quarterbacks.
Throughout the tournament, Keels wasn’t simply overseeing operations from a distance. He was actively engaged, personally counting down the quarterbacks’ four-second clock to ensure every game maintained the integrity and pace the format demands. His hands-on leadership demonstrated that details matter, and those details helped create one of the most professionally run events of the summer.
Of course, football is an emotional game, and competitive environments can sometimes produce unnecessary distractions. That wasn’t the case at the Battle of North Georgia. The intensity on the field was undeniable, but so was the respect displayed by the athletes and coaches. There were no unnecessary confrontations, no sideline drama, and no distractions from the competition. Instead, fans witnessed exactly what 7-on-7 football should be, high-level athletes competing with passion while displaying sportsmanship and respect for one another.
That atmosphere didn’t happen by accident. It was a direct reflection of the culture that Micah Keels and Next Gen Academy continue to build throughout North Georgia. Their mission extends well beyond winning football games. They are developing young men through discipline, accountability, education, and character while providing a platform for athletes to showcase their abilities in a first-class environment.
