Hampton, Ga. – The Lovejoy Wildcats leaned on their defense and running game Friday night, grinding out a 21-0 victory over the McIntosh Chiefs in a Region 3-5A matchup. The first half was a defensive slugfest, with both teams trading stops and neither offense able to find a rhythm. The scoreboard remained empty heading into halftime at 0-0. Just before the break, Lovejoy made a key adjustment, turning to backup quarterback Deshun Gilbert in place of senior starter Ryan Henson. The change seemed to spark the Wildcats. With 9:23 remaining in the third quarter, running back Kelan Anderson broke through for the game’s first touchdown, putting Lovejoy up 7-0. Minutes later, Gilbert showed his poise in the pocket, connecting with Corey Orr for a touchdown strike to extend the lead to 14-0 with 5:00 left in the quarter.
From there, Lovejoy’s defense continued to control the game, forcing punts and shutting down any momentum the Chiefs tried to build. In the fourth quarter, Aquil Beazer sealed the win with a tough rushing touchdown, pushing the Wildcats’ advantage to 21-0.
Despite the victory, the 21 points marked the Wildcats’ lowest offensive output of the season after eclipsing 30 points in every previous game. Still, head coach and staff will likely be pleased with the way the team responded to adversity, particularly with the mid-game quarterback switch.
With the win, Lovejoy improves to 5-0 and 2-0 in Region 3-5A play. The Wildcats now turn their attention to next week’s matchup against Morrow. The Mustangs defense has allowed an average of 30.8 points per game, which could give Lovejoy’s offense an opportunity to return to its high-scoring ways.
