DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Records are made to be broken, and Stephenson High School senior running back Jayden Johnson has officially etched his name into DeKalb County football history. The Middle Tennessee State University commit has become DeKalb County’s all-time leading rusher, surpassing the previous record of 5,055 career rushing yards. Johnson now sits atop the record books with an impressive 5,076 career rushing yards, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest running backs to ever play high school football in the county. What makes this accomplishment even more remarkable is that Johnson isn’t finished. With three games remaining on Stephenson’s regular-season schedule, the senior standout has an opportunity to extend his record and establish a mark that could stand for years to come.

A Goal Years in the Making

For Johnson, breaking the rushing record wasn’t something that happened overnight. It took years of dedication, consistency, and hard work to reach this historic milestone. This past summer, I had an opportunity to speak with Johnson about the possibility of becoming DeKalb County’s all-time leading rusher. With the record within reach heading into his senior season, I wanted to know whether the milestone was something he had been thinking about. Johnson didn’t shy away from the question.

“Obviously it’s a goal I want to reach… I’m not worried about it, I’m going to do what I need to do for my team to win,” Johnson told FanVerse Sports.

Looking back at that conversation, his response says a lot about the type of player and teammate Johnson has become. While individual accomplishments are certainly important, Johnson made it clear that winning football games was his top priority. Now, several weeks into his senior campaign, he has managed to accomplish both.

More Than Just Individual Success

One of the most impressive aspects of Johnson’s historic season is that his individual success has translated into team success. The Stephenson Jaguars currently stand at 6-1 and are positioning themselves for another postseason appearance. With three regular-season games remaining, the Jaguars appear to be in excellent shape to secure a playoff berth and potentially make a deep run.

For a program like Stephenson, which has built a reputation for producing talented football players and competing at a high level, having a player like Johnson in the backfield gives the Jaguars a tremendous advantage. His ability to consistently produce on the ground has been a major part of Stephenson’s offensive success. More importantly, his commitment to doing whatever is necessary to help his team win reflects the leadership expected from a senior.

Johnson could have entered the season focused entirely on chasing the rushing record. Instead, he approached the year with a team-first mentality, allowing the individual accolades to follow. That mindset makes his accomplishment even more meaningful.
