Big Cat Classic Showdown: Can Mundy’s Mill Bounce Back or Will Lovejoy Stay on Top?

Jonesboro, GA- The stage is set for another heated chapter in the Big Cat Classic as the Lovejoy Wildcats and Mundy’s Mills Tigers prepare to battle it out under the Friday night lights. Lovejoy has claimed victory in two of the last three matchups, but in rivalry games like this, history doesn’t always tell the whole story.

The Lovejoy Wildcats enter the 2025 season after finishing 4-6 overall and 4-3 in region play, good enough for fourth place and a postseason berth. Their playoff run was cut short in the first round with a narrow loss to Woodward Academy, but the fight they showed has given the program renewed confidence. At the center of that confidence is senior quarterback Ryan Heston, who is coming off a strong junior season. With another year of experience, Heston is ready to take command of the offense and lead Lovejoy’s push for an even deeper playoff run. The Wildcats’ defense will also be tested early, but the physicality of this rivalry should bring out their best.

For Mundys Mill, last season couldn’t have ended soon enough. The Tigers failed to record a single win, a far cry from their impressive 8-3 record in 2023, when they finished second in the region and were led by All-State linebacker Joshua Ofor, now making plays at NC State University. That same year, they handed Lovejoy one of its toughest losses of the season.

Head Coach and the Tigers’ returning veterans know the path forward won’t be easy, but the offseason has been all about restoring pride and rebuilding a winning culture. The Tigers talent eager to prove themselves, and nothing would send a louder message than upsetting their rival to kick off the year.

Keys to Victory

For Lovejoy: Control the tempo with Heston’s leadership, limit turnovers, and use defensive pressure to disrupt Mundys Mill’s offense.

For Mundys Mill: Win the battle in the trenches, contain Lovejoy’s dual attack, and feed off the emotional spark of rivalry week to fuel a four-quarter effort.

The Big Cat Classic has produced its share of surprises, and this year’s clash has the ingredients for another close finish. Lovejoy’s experience and returning quarterback give them the edge on paper, but Mundy’s Mill hunger to erase last season’s disappointment could make this anyone’s game. In rivalry games, records don’t matter, pride does. And both teams have plenty to prove when the Wildcats and Tigers line up for the 2025 Big Cat Classic.
