Stockbridge, Georgia – The Sandy Creek Patriots are entering an unusual part of their season. After improving to 7-0, the defending Class 4A state champions now face back-to-back bye weeks and will not return to action until they travel to Hampton on October 23. While a two-week break this late in the season could potentially disrupt a team’s rhythm, Sandy Creek enters the layoff in about as good of a position as possible. The Patriots remain undefeated and have established themselves as the clear favorite in Region 4-4A. More impressive has been what Sandy Creek has done defensively. Since defeating North Clayton 28-19 on September 4, the Patriots have allowed just six total points. Those six points came in Sandy Creek’s most recent victory over Woodland on Friday night. The Patriots aren’t just winning games, they are controlling them. But with so many lopsided victories comes another challenge: making sure a team with championship expectations doesn’t become complacent.
Following Friday’s game, I asked Sandy Creek head coach Darius Smiley how he plans to keep his team motivated through consecutive bye weeks. “Our message to our kids is don’t get bored with the preparation that has given you the success that you have,” Smiley said. It’s a simple but powerful message, especially coming from the head coach of the reigning state champions. Sandy Creek already knows what it takes to make a championship run. Now, the challenge is maintaining the same habits, preparation and attention to detail that helped the Patriots reach the top in the first place.
Hill Leading a Dangerous Patriots Offense
On the field, quarterback Caleb Hill has been one of the driving forces behind Sandy Creek’s undefeated start. Hill has thrown 12 touchdown passes through seven games and has shown tremendous poise in the pocket. But opposing defenses also have to account for what he can do with his legs. Hill has added eight rushing touchdowns, giving him 20 total touchdowns on the season. The Patriots also have weapons around him. Tyrann Williams has helped lead the ground attack with five rushing touchdowns, while senior Khayline Stevenson has emerged as one of Hill’s top targets. Stevenson leads the Patriots with 257 receiving yards and has hauled in three touchdown receptions.
Then there is Nathan Holston. The two-way DB/WR has proven to be a difference-maker on both sides of the football. Whether Sandy Creek needs a play offensively or a stop defensively, Holston has consistently shown the ability to make an impact. That balance is part of what makes the Patriots so dangerous. Sandy Creek isn’t relying on one player or one side of the football to carry the team.
The Bigger Goal Remains
At 7-0, Sandy Creek is sitting exactly where a defending state champion wants to be entering the second half of the season. The Patriots are undefeated. Their defense is dominating. Their offense has multiple playmakers, and they have positioned themselves to make another run at a region championship. Now comes a different kind of test. For the next two weeks, Sandy Creek won’t have an opponent standing across the field. The Patriots will have to compete against complacency and continue preparing with the same intensity that helped them get to 7-0. That’s where Smiley’s message becomes even more important: don’t get bored with the preparation. Sandy Creek has spent the first seven games showing why it remains one of the teams to beat in Class 4A. The Patriots aren’t simply trying to put together another successful season. They have their eyes on another trip to the state championship, and another opportunity to bring home a title.
