Atlanta, Georgia – For the first time in three seasons, the Buford High School Wolves will take the field without a quarterback carrying the Raiola name. While that marks the end of an unforgettable chapter in one of Georgia’s premier football programs, it also signals the beginning of a new era, one led by James Madison commit DJ Hunter. Replacing a legendary name at quarterback is no easy task, especially at a program where championships are the standard. But Hunter isn’t shying away from the challenge. Instead, he is embracing it with confidence, preparation, and the mindset of a leader.
Hunter began his high school career in Knoxville, Tennessee, before making his way to Buford, where he has steadily earned the trust of his coaches and teammates. His skill set makes him an ideal fit to run one of the nation’s most talented offenses. He possesses polished mechanics, excellent footwork, impressive arm strength, and the ability to make throws at every level of the field. His athleticism also allows him to extend plays when protection breaks down, giving the Wolves another dimension offensively.
Buford enters the 2026 season as the defending national champions after an undefeated campaign and is widely regarded as the consensus No. 1 high school football team in both Georgia and the nation. With that ranking comes immense expectations, and every opponent on the schedule will view the Wolves as the team to beat.
During a recent interview with FanVerse Sports, Hunter was asked about the pressure of taking over at quarterback for one of the country’s most prestigious programs.
“I do good with pressure,” Hunter said confidently.
He continued, “I just have to perform. At the same time, it is a lot of pressure with us being national champions.”
Those words reflect the mentality of a quarterback who understands exactly what is expected of him. Hunter knows that maintaining Buford’s championship standard will require consistency, discipline, and relentless preparation.That preparation has already been on display throughout the offseason.
Hunter shared that he has been staying after practice with his receivers and running backs to get in extra routes and handoff work. Building chemistry before the season begins has been one of his biggest priorities. He’s also remained in constant communication with Buford’s offensive coordinator throughout the summer, making sure the offense continues to operate at a championship level. Those extra hours often separate good quarterbacks from great ones, and Hunter appears determined to leave nothing to chance.

Buford returns a talented group of playmakers on offense along with one of the most respected coaching staffs in high school football led by head coach Bryant Appling.
