Decatur, Georgia – When people talk about high school football in DeKalb County, Georgia, the conversation almost always begins with the powerhouse programs. Schools like Southwest DeKalb, Stephenson, and, more recently, Lithonia have built reputations for producing elite talent and competing at the highest level. Their success has helped establish DeKalb County as one of Georgia’s premier football hotbeds. The Redan Raiders, however, have often found themselves just outside that conversation.
Over the years, Redan has shown flashes of potential, producing talented athletes and competing in tough contests, but the program has yet to consistently reach the level of success enjoyed by some of the county’s traditional powers. Now, the Raiders are hoping a new voice on the sidelines can help change the trajectory of the program. That responsibility belongs to first-year head coach Ronald Lewis. Lewis understands the challenge ahead, but he also believes the foundation is in place to build a competitive football team. During a recent interview with FanVerse Sports, Lewis was asked about his expectations for the upcoming season.
“Five hundred or better,” he said confidently.
It’s a realistic goal for a program looking to take the next step.
Coach Lewis knows wins won’t come simply because expectations have changed. They will come through discipline, preparation, and attention to the little things that often determine the outcome of close football games.
“We need to focus on the details,” Lewis added.
That statement carries significant weight when reflecting on last season. The Raiders were much closer to a .500 record than many may realize. One of their most heartbreaking losses came in overtime against Therrell, a defensive battle that ended in a 6-0 defeat. Turning just one or two close losses into victories can completely change the outlook of a season and, more importantly, the confidence within a program.
Redan will lean on several experienced leaders to help establish that winning culture. Wide receiver and linebacker Ethan Jones has emerged as one of the team’s vocal leaders, while quarterback Treylon Roberts will be tasked with directing the offense and keeping the Raiders composed in critical moments.
The duo has spent the offseason putting in the work both on and off the field, developing the chemistry necessary to lead the Raiders into a new era. Their leadership, combined with Coach Lewis’ emphasis on accountability and execution, gives Redan reason for optimism heading into the 2026 season. Building a winning program doesn’t happen overnight. It requires patience, commitment, and a belief in the process. While Redan may not yet receive the same recognition as some of DeKalb County’s perennial contenders, the Raiders appear determined to change that narrative.
Only time will tell if Redan is ready to become a consistent winner year after year. But with a new head coach, dedicated leaders, and a renewed focus on the details, one thing is certain, the Raiders are embracing the challenge and are eager to prove they belong among DeKalb County’s rising football programs.
